Receiving Feedback Effectively

Why Giving Feedback Matters to Your Employees | Lucidchart Blog

Receiving Feedback the RIGHT way!

  • Don't take it personally! Be aware of your responses, and if your teacher is providing verbal feedback, don't look bored or distracted. Attentiveness  indicates that you value what your teacher has to say. It is also the most respectful way to  behave.

  • Be open. This means being receptive to new ideas and different opinions.

  • Understand the message. Make sure you understand what the feedback is referring to, especially before responding to the feedback. Ask questions for clarification if necessary.

How to Use Assignment Feedback

Feedback is the opportunity you get to check yourself, see how you’re going, and look for opportunities to improve. Assignment feedback is about personal growth.

1. Start with a growth mindset
Having a growth mindset means that you believe you have the ability to improve. People with a growth mindset think that they are in control of their own future and actively go about achieving their goals.

2. Read over your assignment feedback, and then leave it for a day or two
It can be emotional receiving negative feedback, especially if there is . Read through all the feedback and then schedule a time to sit down and make a plan to improve. You’ll find that when you come back to the feedback a day or two later, the emotion is gone. You’ll not look at the mark but look through the feedback to see what you can pick out of it that you can use in the future.

3.  List your Feedback Points and How to Improve them
Using two columns, list all the assignment feedback you received on the left and then provide space on the right for you to fil in how you’d like to improve on that work for next time. Brainstorm ways you can focus on points your teacher wants you to improve on, and list all the ways you think you can do this. Aim also to link these changes to the next assessment, i.e: “In future assessments, I will…” In this way, you’re turning feedback into feed forward.

eg:

Feedback Action Plan
You need to show more depth in your answers

Speak to my teacher about exactly what this means.
Re-write a paragraph from my assignment that was lacking depth, and ask my teacher's opinion on this.

You have not referenced correctly Make an appointment to see Library staff to show me how to reference properly
You have made a few spelling errors Next time, take the time to to proofread my work before submitting my assignment and double-check any words I am not sure how to spell.

Remember: While you’re at it, note down your points of praise. Give yourself a moment to congratulate yourself on the things you did well!

4. Show your teacher how you used the feedback to improve in the next assignment
There is no point creating and implementing an action plan to improve if you are still heading in the wrong direction. Show your teacher your action plan table and what you intend to do to improve. Your teacher is there to help you move in the right direction, and they will be proud of your efforts to progress.

5. Keep Your Assignment Feedback for Reflection
You should keep a folder on your computer that has all your assignments and feedback kept in there. Scan paper documents into the folder. You need to identify trends in your assignment feedback to see what your true weaknesses are.
