Examples of page numbers in in-text citations

Just as Sherlock Holmes investigates a case, psychologists must evaluate all the available data before making a deduction, lest they jump to a conclusion on the basis of insufficient evidence (Bram & Peebles, 2014, pp. 32–33).

According to Baxter (2007, pp. 23, 29, 40), all forms of postmodern art can be seen as reactions to faked sincerity or faked patriotism.

One of the most memorable quotes is when he says, “You are going to live a good and long life filled with great and terrible moments that you cannot even imagine yet!” to Augustus (Green, 2012, p. 272).

How do I format page numbers in in-text citations and reference lists?

  • Page numbers are necessary for all direct quote in-text citations
  • For indirect quotes / paraphrases in-text citations, page numbers are not a necessity, (but can be added where possible)

  • For a single page, use p. followed by a space and then the page number
    Example : p. 27
(note the space between the full stop and the number)

  • For multiple pages within a page range, use pp. followed by a space and then the page numbers. The page numbers are separated by a hyphen.
    Example : pp. 27-32
(note the space between the full stop and the first number)

  • For a selection of multiple pages, use pp. followed by a space and then the page numbers.
The page numbers are separated by a comma or hyphen.
    Example : pp. 27, 29, 32-34
(note the space between the full stop and the first number, and the space between the comma and the following number)
