The building of suspense to create reader engagement - Carefully detailed archetypes (example: Dracula, serial killer or ghost type) - Unique and unusual characters - Shocking events or unexpected twists that the reader could not possibly predict - An ending that may leave the reader feeling uncomfortable, that the story could be true...

Language Features of Horror:
Often written in the third person - Descriptions linked to clues - ‘red herrings’ and clues are included by: dialogue, relationships, and characters’ implied motives
