Google Search Techniques
Google can be a great resource for finding information for assignments and assessment tasks, but finding the right information which is also authoritative and reliable is not always easy. There are some useful Google search bar techniques you can use to retrieve reputable, effective results.
Some common Google search techniques:
When you search... | Use this technique... | Example... |
An exact phrase | Put the words in quotation marks | "physical education" will search for the phrase as a whole, rather than return results for "physical" and "education" separately |
Excluding a word | Put - in front of excluded word (no space) | bats -cricket will search for the animal and anything else regarding 'bats', but will exclude results for cricket bats |
For a specific site | Put site: in front of the site or domain name | site: youtube.com mount everest will return all YouTube videos about Mount Everest |
Google Advanced Search
Google Advanced Search allows specific perimeters to be included around your search terms to receive relevant, current information.
Find Google Advanced Search by Googling 'Advanced Search or go to

After entering your search terms, click on the dropdown menu for the 'last update' option:
Choosing 'up to a year ago' will filter all results with a publication date from the last 12 months:
