Was banning Trump from Twitter the right thing to do?
Throughout his time as president, Trump made frequent and prolific use of Twitter. He often tweeted dozens of times a day and had a following of nearly 80million people. This changed on January 9th when Twitter suspended Trump’s account “due to the risk of...incitement to violence.”
A few days earlier, a group of Trump supporters rioted in and around The Capitol - a government building where politicians work. The Trump supporters were protesting against the result of the presidential election which was won by Joe Biden. Supporters of Trump claim the election results were a fraud and Trump actually won.
Five people died due the riots. In a tweet after the riots, Trump praised the rioters as “patriots” and said they should not be treated “unfairly”. Many people felt that through his tweets, Trump actively supported violence. Twitter agreed and suspended his account.
