Ticking Mind Issues: The safety of Uber food delivery drivers

Who is responsible for the death of Uber delivery riders?

In the second half of 2020, five delivery riders working for various delivery apps, such as Uber and Deliveroo, died in road accidents in Australia. This spike in deaths sparked debate about who is responsible for the safety of riders.

Many people argued that food delivery companies like Uber are responsible because they exploit their workers and put them in dangerous situations. Some people blamed the delivery riders themselves, arguing that they make their own decisions to ride in risky ways.

A further group of people argued that consumers should bear some responsibility, because we thoughtlessly order food and don’t care about the conditions of the people who deliver it.
