By the time WW1 ended, the American people had grown tired of liberal crusades, rejected the League of Nations and returned to a more conservative foreign policy. Most just wanted to take care of their own businesses and have a good time. The presidents and the congresses they elected in that period (1920 - 1932) expressed this new-found conservative mood.

A turn to the right: Conservatism grows in America in the 1920s Americans experimented with many new customs and social traditions during the nineteen twenties. It was a time filled with new dances, new kinds of clothes and some of the most imaginative art and writing ever produced in the United States. But in most ways, the nineteen twenties were a conservative time in American life. Voters elected three conservative Republican presidents: Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover. And they supported many conservative social and political policies.

Scopes Trial In 1925 in Dayton, Tennessee, the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial involved John Thomas Scopes, a young high school science teacher, accused of teaching evolution in violation of a Tennessee state law. The law, which had been passed in March, made it a misdemeanor punishable by fine to “teach any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals.”
