Native Title
Native title is the recognition that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have rights and interests to land and waters according to their traditional law and customs as set out in Australian Law. Native Title is governed by the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth).
Mabo
Mabo is used in reference to the 1992 ruling of the High Court of Australia that Aboriginal claims on land supersede Crown sovereignty and white settlement.
Wik Decision
The Wik Vs. Queensland decision in 1996 is a legal case between the Wik and Thayorre peoples of Cape York Peninsula and the State of Queensland. In attempt to recognise and gain land rights to two pieces of land in Queensland; Holroyd River Holding and The Mitchellton lease, the Wik People of Cape York Peninsula, and the Thayorre People of South Cape York Peninsula, made a claim that Native Title co-existed with pastoral lease.
Aboriginal Land Rights
The Commonwealth has responsibility for Land Rights in the Northern Territory through the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth). Under this Act, traditional owners hold decision-making powers over the use of Aboriginal land. Land Councils assist traditional owners to acquire and manage their land.
Dreamtime and Dreaming
The Dreamtime is the period in which life was created according to Aboriginal culture. Dreaming is the word used to explain how life came to be; it is the stories and beliefs behind creation. It is called different names in different Aboriginal languages, such as: Ngarranggarni, Tjukula Jukurrpa. In the Dreamtime, the natural world—animals, trees, plants, hills, rocks, waterholes, rivers—were created by spiritual beings/ancestors. The stories of their creation are the basis of Aboriginal lore and culture.
Agnostic
A person who holds the view that any ultimate reality (such as God) is unknown and probably unknowable./ one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God or a god.
Atheism
A lack of belief or a strong disbelief in the existence of a god or any gods / a philosophical or religious position characterized by disbelief in the existence of a god or any gods.
Humanism
A rationalist outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters.
