HIV and women having children
HIV can pass from mother to baby during pregnancy or birth or via breastmilk. Due to treatment advances, mother to child transmission of HIV (also known as vertical transmission of HIV) is very rare in Australia.
With medical support, the HIV transmission rate from mother with HIV taking antiretroviral treatment to their unborn child is 1% or less in Australia.
