How to search for information effectively
 

Whether you are finding information for your assessment by searching Google or research databases, knowing how to effectively use search engines will ensure the information you find is authoritative, current and relevant to your assessment task. Applying effective keywords and terms will also reduce the amount of time you may spend aimlessly trying to find what you're looking for - work smarter, not harder!

Using Keywords to Search Effectively

When searching for information in research databases, there are a few basic search techniques that will ensure your searches are effective. 

It is important to enter keywords in your search bar which are relevant to your topic or assignment.

Google Search Techniques

Google can be a great resource for finding information for assignments and assessment tasks, but finding the right information which is also authoritative and reliable is not always easy.  There are some useful Google search bar techniques you can use to retrieve reputable, effective results.
 

Some common Google search techniques:
 

 When you search...

 Use this technique...

An exact phrase

Put the words in quotation marks

Excluding a word

Put - in front of excluded word (no space)

Alternate words at same time

Put OR between the two search words

For a specific site

Put site: in front of the site or domain name

Google Advanced Search

Google Advanced Search

Google Advanced Search allows specific perimeters to be included around your search terms to receive relevant, current information.

Find Google Advanced Search by Googling 'Advanced Search or go to 
https://www.google.com.au/advanced_search

 

After entering your search terms, click on the dropdown menu for the 'last update' option:
 

 

Choosing 'up to a year ago' will filter all results with a publication date from the last 12 months:
