The Research Process - Step-by-step ![]()

Step 1: Define the task
Identify exactly what the task is asking you to do, and identify what you may already know.
Break the task down and identify keywords in the task that will assist in your information search.
Remember to speak to your teacher if something does not make sense or if you need any clarification.

Step 2: Find information
Search for information across a wide range of information sources - websites, books, Britannica School, videos, podcasts, etc.
Remember: Not all information you find online is accurate or reliable!
This short video will help you identify whether or not the information you find is reliable, and have a look at the Effective Search Techniques page of this guide to make sure you are finding information that is reliable, current and without bias.
NOTE: You need to reference all the information you use in your assignment, so make sure you are keeping track of where you are getting your information from.

Step 3: Check your information
Look at all the information you have retrieved and consider if you have everything you need.
Is the information you have found EXACTLY answering the question at hand?
Are you happy with the variety of your information sources? Do you need to go back to Step 2 and gather more information?
If you are happy with the information you have found, continue to Step 4...

Step 4: Tackle your assignment!
Complete your assignment in your own words.
Acknowledge your information sources by referencing your work, using the APA Reference Guide.
Remember you can always have the Library team check over your references before you submit your assignment by submitting a Library Helpdesk ticket.

Step 5: Evaluate and consider feedback
Once you have your assignment back, consider and review the feedback from your teacher and make a note of areas that have been highlighted as needing improvement.
Think about your time management, research and organisation skills. How can you tackle the research process more efficiently and effectively next time?
