Conditions during the Kokoda Campaign
The weather played a major part in the Kokoda campaign in New Guinea during
World War II, and the winter of 1942 was unseasonably wet and conditions were treacherous. Click on the image below or here to watch a short interview about the challenges soldiers faced.
This short video provides a view of some sections the Kokoda Trail as it is now. While it differs in condition to what the Australian soldiers experienced during the Kokoda campaign, it may offer a glimpse into just how narrow and rough the trail is.
This 1942 Australian documentary won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in March of 1943. It covers the Australian efforts to stop the Japanese advance in New Guinea during the Kokoda Track Campaign there in 1942.
