Drought is a prolonged dry period in the natural climate cycle that can occur anywhere in the
world. It is a slow-onset disaster characterized by the lack of precipitation, resulting in a water
shortage. Drought can have a serious impact on health, agriculture, economies, energy and the
environment.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warns that inhabitants of Gao in eastern Mali are suffering from a severe water shortage. The shortage is a result of fighting in the area, which has damaged the local infrastructure and made it dangerous for aid agencies to bring in water by truck.

Mali is a large landlocked country located in West Africa. It is bordered by Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania. The country came out of a military dictatorship in the early 1990s and remained a relatively stable and democratic republic until 2012, when the president was ousted and the military seized power.
