for your Assessment!

  • A picture book's structure is tight - this means you have to make a complete story make sense, with character and plot development, within the allocated 400-500 words

  • Illustrations can span across two open pages, or on a single page, and help tell the story visually

  • A 'blurb' is a short summary of the story, written on the back cover of the book. It should be short and engaging, and encourage the reader to pick up the book and read it!

  • 'Page-turn' technique is a term explaining a break or division in the story to build suspense, surprise or fun. An example of this may a page of text that reads "The small boy climbed to the top of the mountain and saw....", with the remainder of the sentence written on the following page.

  • The basic framework of a picture book involves 3 steps:
    1. Set-up the story (the beginning) - establish your central character, setting and story projection
    2. Arc / critical point (complication) - a problem or crucial change in the story occurs
    3. Resolution (ending) - problem is solved / rectified, character has developed from beginning to end

  • Think about the language you are using, and who you are writing the book for. Language should be simple and straightforward, and be able to be understood and comprehended by a 5 year old.
