So you get dressed and, looking very smart, you arrive at the chosen museum and you come across something unusual: a chair. What does that mean? What is this art about? Joseph Kosuth – Shifting Art from “How” to “Why”
Joseph Kosuth is one of the pioneers of installation art and conceptual art, a movement which emerged during the 1960s and 1970s and redefined the notion of the art object. Kosuth was among the first artists to employ appropriation strategies, language-based works, photography, installations and public media. He also wrote some of the earliest theoretical texts supporting these approaches. Throughout his career, Kosuth has continually explored the production and role of language and meaning in art.
Joseph Kosuth - Five Words in Green Neon
In 1969, Joseph Kosuth published the first part of his three-part manifesto “Art After Philosophy” in a London journal and instantly became a leading theorist and practitioner of Conceptual art. “Being an artist now,” he wrote, “means to question the nature of art.” According to Kosuth, traditional art forms such as painting would only summon old-fashioned considerations of aesthetic value or taste. Art needed to define itself anew by abandoning conventional means of expression.
