The function of verbatim theatre conventions in three Australian plays This article researches and analyses the broad diversity of conventions evident in three Australian verbatim plays; Alana Valentine’s Parramatta Girls (2007), Campion Decent’s Embers (2008) and David Burton’s April’s Fool (2010). Developing a greater understanding of the function of verbatim theatre’s conventions therefore deepens our knowledge of dramatic composition and the choices these playwrights have made in translating their verbatim stories into dramatic material.
REAL TALK: Some of the documentary theatre's leading lights discuss the art of the interview - and the deeply personal playmaking that comes after. A panel discussion with documentary theater playwrights Steve Cosson, Leigh ondakowski, K. J. Sanchez, and Ping Chong is presented. The playwrights mention the process of writing a documentary play, the work that goes into interviewing people for the content of the play, and what makes a successful play. Works discussed include Ping Chong's "Undesirable Elements" series, Cosson's "This Beautiful City," and Fondakowski's "The Laramie Project."
